FAQ - Tattoo Removal

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt?
Some people find this treatment more intense than other laser treatments, but most people find it less painful than actually getting a tattoo and the treatment is much quicker! You can help to reduce sensitivity by avoiding caffeine on the day of your appointment and making sure you have had something to eat and drink. Your technician will use cooling packs and/or numbing cream and check with you regularly to make sure you are comfortable.

Will it completely remove my tattoo?
That depends on the tattoo. Laser treatment typically works best on black ink, colours can be more difficult to remove and sometimes the best that can be achieved is significant fading. This would be enough to give you more options for a cover-up tattoo.

Can you remove part/new tattoos?
We can remove part of a tattoo in most cases, a consultation will be necessary to make an assessment. New tattoos have to heal properly before they can be treated with a laser, it’s best to allow 8 weeks for full healing – starting sooner has a risk of injuring the skin and will not effectively remove the ink.

Will it leave a scar?
The laser treatment will not leave a scar, although it may reduce pigmentation in the skin on some clients. If scarring occurred when the tattoo was originally applied, that scarring will remain – the laser can remove ink, but not scarring. Following proper aftercare protocols will also reduce any chances of scarring.

How many treatments will I need?
Again, this depends on the tattoo. There are a number of factors which affect how many treatments you may need – we usually advise that most tattoos can take between 8-12 sessions to achieve a good result although some take less.

How often can I come for treatment?
Usually, treatments can take place every 6-8 weeks as advised by your technician. Coming sooner will not remove your tattoo more quickly, the skin needs time to recover between treatments.

Are there any side effects?
You can expect redness, tenderness, possibly blistering and bruising, and slight swelling. These are all normal occurrences after laser treatment and your technician will make sure you are informed on aftercare procedures.

Can I go back to my normal activities directly after treatment?
There will be some things you need to avoid, like swimming/hot tubs and excessive exercise. Depending on your job, you should not expect to go straight back to work after the treatment. Your technician will go through the aftercare protocols with you at your consultation and advise you on whether you need to arrange time off following treatment.
